Peter Gabriel Biography

Peter Brian Gabriel is an English musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, and campaigner. He is also known by his stage name, Gabriel. It was his role as the founding lead singer of the progressive rock band Genesis that brought him to prominence. Following his departure from Genesis in 1975, he began a successful solo career with “Solsbury Hill”, being the first single released under his own name. So, his album which was released in 1986, is his best-selling record to date. It has been certified three times platinum in the United Kingdom and five times platinum in the United States. The most popular song from the album was “Sledgehammer,” which went on to win a record nine MTV Awards at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards. In addition, a report published in 2011 stated that the music video for “Sledgehammer” was MTV’s most played music video of all time.

Peter Brian Gabriel was born on February 13th, 1950 in the town of Chobham, which is located in the county of Surrey in England. Gabriel wrote his first song, “Sammy the Slug,” when he was 12 years old. Around this time, he received money from an aunt intended for professional singing lessons, but instead, he spent it on the first record released by the Beatles, titled Please Please Me. He began his education at Charterhouse, a public school located in Godalming, Surrey, in September of 1963. His first band was a traditional jazz ensemble called the Milords (or M’Lords), and there he served as the vocalist and drummer for the band. After that, a festive band known as the Spoken Word performed for the audience.

Gabriel established Garden Wall in 1965 with two of his schoolmates, Tony Banks on piano and Chris Stewart on drums.

For the better part of his career, Gabriel has been an advocate for music from around the world. In 1982, he was one of the co-founders of the WOMAD event. Through his Real World Records label, he has maintained his concentration on producing and promoting music from throughout the world. In addition to this, he is a pioneer in the field of digital distribution methods for music, having been a co-founder of OD2, which was one of the earliest online music download services. Gabriel has also been active in a variety of charitable causes and organizations. 1980 saw the debut of the anti-apartheid single “Biko,” which he had written. He has taken part in a number of human rights benefit concerts, one of which being Amnesty International’s Human Rights Now! tour in 1988. In addition, he helped to establish the Witness human rights organization in the year 1992. Gabriel and Richard Branson are credited with the development of The Elders, which was initiated by Nelson Mandela in 2007.

Gabriel has been honored with numerous accolades throughout his career, including three Brit Awards, six Grammy Awards, thirteen MTV Video Music Awards, the first Pioneer Award at the BT Digital Music Awards, the Q magazine Lifetime Achievement Award, the Ivor Novello Award for Lifetime Achievement, and the Polar Music Prize. In addition, Gabriel was named the Best British Male in 1987. At the 57th annual BMI London Awards, he has bestowed the title of BMI Icon in recognition of his “impact on generations of music makers.” In 2006, he was presented with the Man of Peace award by the winners of the Nobel Peace Prize, and in 2008, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Both of these honors were bestowed upon him in recognition of the many years he spent working to advocate for human rights. Gabriel is considered “one of rock’s most ambitious and innovative musicians, as well as one of rock’s most political figures,” according to AllMusic. In 2010, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the band Genesis. In 2014, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist. In March 2015, the University of South Australia bestowed upon him an honorary doctorate in honor of the significant contributions he has made to the field of music.
