Phil Collins Biography

Philip David Charles Collins is an English drummer, songwriter, record producer, and actor. He is most known for his work with the rock band Genesis as the drummer and lead singer, as well as his solo career, which began in 1981. As a solo performer, Collins had three UK number-one hits and seven US number-one songs between 1982 and 1990. He had more US top 40 singles than any other musician in the 1980s when his work with Genesis, his collaborations with other artists, and his solo career are combined. “In the Air Tonight,” “Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now”), “One More Night,” and “Another Day in Paradise” were among his most popular hits at the time.

Collins was born in west London on January 30, 1951. He began playing the drums at the age of five and went on to theater school, where he received numerous roles as a child actor, including his first major role as the Artful Dodger in the West End musical Oliver! at the age of thirteen. Following that, he followed a musical career, joining Genesis as their drummer in 1970 and becoming lead singer in 1975 after Peter Gabriel‘s resignation. Collins launched a successful solo career in the 1980s, motivated by his marital dissolution and love of soul music. He released the albums Face Value (1981), Hello, I Must Be Going (1982), No Jacket Required (1985), and…But Seriously (1989).

Collins became “one of the most successful pop and adult contemporary vocalists of the ’80s and beyond,” according to AllMusic. On many of his tracks, he became noted for a particular gated reverb percussion sound. He was the only performer to appear at both Live Aid performances in 1985. He also resumed his acting career, first appearing in Miami Vice and then in the film Buster (1988). Collins departed Genesis in 1996 to pursue solo projects, including creating music for Disney’s Tarzan (1999), for which he won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “You’ll Be in My Heart.” In 2007, he reunited with Genesis on their Turn It On Again Tour. Collins released his autobiography in 2016 and finished his Not Dead Yet Tour in 2019 after a five-year hiatus to focus on his family. In 2020, he rejoined Genesis for a second reunion tour, which will last until March 2022.

Collins has eight studio albums in his repertoire, which have sold 33.5 million certified units in the United States and an estimated 150 million records globally, making him one of the best-selling artists in the world. Along with Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson, he is one of only three music artists to have sold over 100 million records both as a solo artist and as a member of a band.

He has eight Grammy Awards, six Brit Awards (three for Best British Male Artist), two Golden Globe Awards, one Academy Award, and a Disney Legend Award to his name. The British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors gave him six Ivor Novello Awards, including the International Achievement Award. In 1999, he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in 2003, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis. In 2012, he was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame, and in 2013 he was inducted into the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame by music journals.
