Reo Speedwagon Biography

REO Speedwagon, current band members consisting of Neal Doughty, Kevin Cronin, Bruce Hall, Dave Amato and Bryan Hitt, released 16 studio albums between 1971 and 2009.

Formed in 1967 in Champaign, Illinois, the band would go on to achieve commercial success in the ’80s, selling millions of records and developing a dedicated fan base. As of 2022, they are still touring where they mostly play their classic hits. They have sold over 40,000,000 units to date.

Hi Infidelity, REO Speedwagon’s biggest hit, was released November 21, 1980 and peaked at #1 on the US Billboard 200 in 1981. It was the best selling album of 1981 in the United States, had over 4 Top 40 Hits and sold over 10,000,000 copies. Good Trouble, released in 1982, peaked at #7 on the same chart. It was closely tied with Wheels Are Turin’ in terms of sales and chart positions. Their album You Can Tune a Piano, but You Can’t Tuna Fish was one of their best selling albums, moving over 2,000,000 records, placing it 29 on the US Billboard 200. It was certified 2x Platinum. Overall they had seven albums place in the top 100 and four in the top 200.

The ‘REO’ in REO Sppedwagon comes from a 1915 truck that was designed by Ransom Eli Olds.

Neal Doughty, (July 29, 1946)

Neal was a founding member of REO Speedwagon and is the only person to have played on every album. He is the keyboardist for the band, and together with original band members Alan Gratzer and Mike Blair. Alan and Mike would depart the band in 1968.

Kevin Cronin, (October 6th, 1951)

Kevin joined the band for their second album, R.E.O/T.W.O, but would take a break until rejoining the group in 1976, staying an active band member to the present day. Kevin is credited with creating fan favorite Keep Pushing.

Bruce Hall, (May 3rd, 1953)

Bruce joined in 1977 as the bass guitarist. His debut performance for the group was You Can Tune A Piano But You Can’t Tuna Fish. He wrote and sang at least nine songs for the band. The first vocal he recorded for the group was “Back On The Road Again,” which enjoyed commercial success as a single track.

Dave Amato (March 3rd, 1953)

Dave joined in May 1983 as the lead guitarist. He has had a successful career, with credits associated with Ted Nugent, Cher, Black Oak Arkansas, Jimmy Barnes, Mastedon, David Lee Roth, Latoya Jackson, Motley Crue, Julian Lennon, Rick Springfield, Aerosmith, Michael Bolton, Player, Richie Sambora. He also sings high harmonies and has done background vocals for different groups.

Bryan Hitt, (January 5th, 1954)

Bryan joined in 1989 as the lead drummer. He has contributed for four studio albums for the group, The Earth, a Small Man, His Dog and a Chicken, Building the Bridge (1996), Find Your Own Way Home (2007) and Not So Silent Night…Christmas with REO Speedwagon (2009)
