Ricky Nelson – Biography, Songs, Albums, & Facts

Ricky Nelson Biography

Ricky Nelson is an American singer and actor who was one of the earliest teen idols in rock music. Ricky rose to stardom at the age of eight on his parents’ television show, Ozzie and Harriet, which epitomized middle-American values in the 1950s and early 1960s. He is well known for his song “Lonesome Town”.

Ricky was born in Teaneck, New Jersey, on May 8, 1940. He started a long and successful career as a renowned music artist in 1957. Ricky’s reputation as a music artist and television star led to a motion picture role in Howard Hawks’ western feature film Rio Bravo, co-starring John Wayne, Dean Martin, and Angie Dickinson (1959).

Between 1957 and 1973, he had 53 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and its predecessors, including “Poor Little Fool” in 1958, which was the first number one song on the then-newly founded Hot 100 chart. On January 21, 1987, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for his 19 further top ten hits. Ricky was voted No. 49 on TV Guide’s list of the 50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time in 1996.

He began his career in show business in 1949, when he starred in The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, a radio sitcom series. Here Come the Nelsons, his first feature picture, was released in 1952. In 1957, he recorded his first single (“I’m Walkin’ b/w “A Teenagers Romance,” Verve 10047X4S), had his television debut as a singer on the sitcom, and published Ricky, his first No. 1 album.

Ricky’s first #1 record, “Poor Little Fool,” was published in 1958, and he was nominated for a Golden Globe for “Most Promising Male Newcomer” in 1959 after starring in Rio Bravo. After the television series ended in 1966, he appeared in a few films and made guest appearances on other television shows. He began to perform in a more country rock style in his twenties, moving away from the pop music of his youth.

He formed the Stone Canyon Band in 1969 after recording several albums with mostly session musicians, the majority of which flopped, and experienced a career resurgence, buoyed by the live album In Concert at the Troubadour, 1969, and had a surprise hit with 1972’s “Garden Party,” which peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100. His comeback, however, was short-lived, since his record label was bought out and dissolved, and his new label did not market his follow-up releases well. Throughout the 1970s, he continued to perform live and appear in minor television roles, though his record label dropped him by the end of the decade. In 1987, two years after his death, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

On New Year’s Eve 1985, Ricky died in a plane crash while traveling from Guntersville, Alabama, to Dallas, Texas, for a concert.

Ricky was married to Sharon Kristin Harmon from 1963 until 1982, and they divorced. Tracy Nelson, Gunnar and Matthew Nelson, twin sons and musicians, and actor Sam were their four children.
