Rod Stewart Biography

Rod Stewart, originally named Sir Roderick David Stewart, is a British rock and pop singer, songwriter, and record producer. He is of Scottish and English descent and was born and reared in London. Stewart, who has sold over 250 million records worldwide, is one of the best-selling musicians of all time, thanks to his distinctive raspy singing voice. In the United Kingdom, he has ten number one albums and 31 top ten singles, six of which have reached number one. In the United States, Stewart has 16 top ten hits, with four of them reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. In the 2016 Birthday Honors, he was knighted for his contributions to music and philanthropy. His songs “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy” and “Maggie May” are popular until today.

Stewart was born at 507 Archway Road, Highgate, North London, on 10 January 1945, and in 1962, he began his musical career by busking with a harmonica. He joined The Dimensions as a vocalist and harmonica player in 1963. Stewart first joined Long John Baldry and the All Stars in 1964, then joined the Jeff Beck Group in 1967. In addition to joining the Faces in 1969, he pursued a solo career, releasing his debut album the same year. Stewart’s early recordings had a mix of rock, folk, soul, and R&B. Every Picture Tells a Story, released in 1971, was his breakthrough album, with the ballad “Maggie May” topping the charts in the UK, US, Canada, and Australia. Never a Dull Moment, his follow-up album from 1972, likewise went to number one in the UK and Australia, as well as number three in the US and Canada. Its single, “You Wear It Well,” went to number one in the UK and was a moderate hit in other countries.

The Faces disbanded in 1975 after Stewart had a few more UK top ten successes. “Sailing,” from the 1975 UK and Australian number-one album Atlantic Crossing, was a smash in the UK, the Netherlands (number one), Germany (number four), and other countries, but barely charted in North America. With A Night on the Town (1976), his fifth consecutive UK number one, he began a three-album run of charting at number one or number three in North America, the United Kingdom, and Australia. “Tonight’s the Night (Gonna Be Alright)” from that album lasted over two months at number one in the United States and Canada, and reached the top five in several other countries. The smash single “You’re in My Heart (The Final Acclaim)” was included on Foot Loose & Fancy Free (1977), as well as the rocker “Hot Legs.” Blondes Have More Fun (1978) and its disco-tinged “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy” both charted at number one in Canada, Australia, and the United States, with “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy” also reaching the top ten in other countries. Throughout the 1970s, Stewart’s albums consistently charted at the top of the Dutch charts, and from 1975 onwards, Stewart’s albums charted at the top of the Swedish charts.

Stewart’s music shifted to a soft rock/middle-of-the-road sound after a disco and new wave period in the late 1970s and early 1980s, with most of his albums reaching the top ten in the UK, Germany, and Sweden, but not so well in the United States. The single “Rhythm of My Heart” was a top five hit in the United Kingdom, the United States, and other countries, and its source album, 1991’s Vagabond Heart, became his highest-charting album in a decade, peaking at number ten in the United States and number two in the United Kingdom. In 1993, he co-wrote the power ballad “All for Love” with Bryan Adams and Sting, which got to number one in a number of countries. He had a string of successful recordings interpreting the Great American Songbook in the early 2000s. On the “Billboard Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists” in 2008, he was recognised as the 17th most successful musician. He was named No. 33 on Q Magazine’s list of the Top 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. He is a Grammy and Brit Award winner.

Stewart was inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the second time in 2012 as a member of Faces.
