Salt-N-Pepa Biography

American hip-hop group Salt-N-Pepa, often spelled Salt ‘N’ Pepa or Salt ‘N Pepa, was founded in New York City in 1985. Salt (Cheryl James), Pepa (Sandra Denton), and DJ Spinderella made up the group (Deidra Roper). They were signed to Next Plateau Records, and in 1987 they released the single “Push It,” which peaked at number one in three nations and reached the top 10 or top 20 in a number of other nations. The first female rap group to attain gold and platinum status, Hot, Cool & Vicious’ debut album sold more than 1 million copies in the US. Over 7 million copies of their fourth album, Very Necessary, were sold globally (5 million in the U.S.), making it the highest-selling album by a female rap act in history at the time.

One of the best-selling rap acts of all time, Salt-N-Pepa have sold over 15 million records worldwide. The ensemble has received numerous Grammy Award nominations. The trio, along with Queen Latifah, who also won the same year, became the first female rap performers to win a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group in 1995 for their song “None of Your Business.” They have been dubbed “The First Ladies of Rap and Hip Hop” in recognition of their contributions to rap and hip hop culture.

The group signed with Next Plateau Entertainment (formerly Next Plateau Records) in September 1985. In December 1986, they released their debut album Hot, Cool & Vicious, which was produced by Azor, the group manager and Salt’s then-boyfriend. After Hanson left in 1987, the band enlisted 15-year-old high school student Deidra Roper (also known as Spinderella).

With the tracks “My Mic Sound Nice,” “Tramp,” and “Chick On The Side,” Hot, Cool & Vicious produced several modest R&B hits. However, the group’s first big breakthrough came when San Francisco DJ and producer Cameron Paul remixed “Push It,” the B-side of the “Tramp” record.

Push It (US #19, UK #2) was included to later editions of Hot, Cool & Vicious and went on to become a platinum single in the United States and a hit in several other nations. With over 1 million copies sold and a Grammy Award nomination, the album’s momentum from that single propelled Denton, James, and Roper to become the first female rap act to achieve platinum sales in the United States. 1.4 million copies of the album were ultimately sold globally.

When Salt-N-subsequent Pepa’s album A Salt with a Deadly Pepa was published on July 26, 1988, it featured the go-go band E.U. on the top 10 R&B smash song “Shake Your Thang,” which reached number 10. Get Up Everybody (Get Up) and “Twist and Shout,” which peaked at number four in the UK and other European nations, respectively, were top 20 R&B hits and minor pop hits. With excess sales of 600,000 copies sold in the United States and a total of 800,000 copies sold abroad, the album was awarded gold certification.

On March 19, 1990, the group’s third album, Blacks’ Magic, was made available. Some of the album’s songs were created by Azor. He consented to letting the performers finish the album with new producers as he was already producing other bands. In addition to hiring many producers, including Invincible’s producer Dana Mozie, Salt and Spinderella took on some production tasks themselves. For the first time, Roper contributed vocals and DJing to an album. The result was six singles released by Next Plateau Records, several of which became hits: “Expression” (US #26, UK #40 in 1990, UK #23 in 1992), a platinum single that had been #1 on the R&B Chart for 8 weeks, and produced by Salt; “Independent”; “I Don’t Know” (featuring Kid ‘n Play); “Do You Want Me” (US #21, UK #5), certified gold; “Let’s Talk About Sex” (US #13, UK #2), certified gold, and later re-recorded as “Let’s Talk About AIDs”; and “You Showed Me” (UK #15). The album ultimately sold 1.5 million copies worldwide
