Screaming Trees was an American rock band founded in 1984 by vocalist Mark Lanegan, guitarist Gary Lee Conner, bassist Van Conner, and drummer Mark Pickerel in Ellensburg, Washington. By the time the band‘s most successful phase arrived, Pickerel had been replaced by Barrett Martin. The band’s sound had hard rock and psychedelic elements, despite being generally linked with grunge. Seven studio albums, five EPs, and three compilations were released by the band. They are well known for their hit “Nearly Lost You”.
Screaming Trees, along with the Melvins, Mudhoney, U-Men, Skin Yard, Soundgarden, Green River, and Malfunkshun, are considered grunge pioneers. Screaming Trees sprang to prominence in the early 1990s as part of the grunge movement, with Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Soundgarden, and became one of the most successful underground music acts of the decade. On the Mainstream Rock chart, the band had one top ten single and two top ten successes on the Modern Rock Tracks list. Clairvoyance, their debut album, was released in 1986 on the Velvetone label. The album’s musical style is a mix of psychedelic rock and heavy rock. With Fisk’s help, Greg Ginn took notice of the album, and the band was signed to SST Records.
Even If and Especially When, the band’s second LP and first for SST, was released in 1987. Following the release of the album in 1987, the band began playing performances across the United States alongside other SST bands such as Firehose and Meat Puppets. Invisible Lantern, their next album, was released in 1988. Buzz Factory was Screaming Trees’ fourth full-length album and their final for SST Records, released in 1989. Their song “Nearly Lost You” reached No. 5 on the Modern Rock Tracks list and No. 50 on the UK Singles Chart, giving it the band’s first international hit. In the United States, Sweet Oblivion sold 300,000 copies.
Screaming Trees only toured Australia once, as part of the Big Day Out festival in early 1995, before starting work on their follow-up to Sweet Oblivion. After a failed album attempt, the band recruited George Drakoulias, a producer who had previously worked with the Black Crowes and the Jayhawks. Dust, the resulting album, was released nearly four years after its predecessor in 1996. The singles “All I Know,” “Sworn and Broken,” and “Dying Days” came from Dust. The album charted at No. 134 on the Billboard 200, No. 32 in the UK Albums Chart, and No. 39 in Canada, making it the first Screaming Trees album to chart outside of the US.
Despite positive reviews, the album failed to equal the success of Sweet Oblivion in terms of sales. Josh Homme, previously of Kyuss, was hired as the rhythm guitarist after the album’s release. Due to difficulties in completing a follow-up to Dust, Screaming Trees went on hiatus for a long time. Their official breakup occurred in the year 2000 as a result of this. Mark Lanegan passed away in Killarney, Ireland, in February 2022.
