Shepherd (band) – Biography, Songs, Albums, Discography & Facts

Shepherd Band Biography

Australian indie pop group Sheppard was founded in 2009. The Australian Recording Industry Association recognized their first studio album, Bombs Away, as gold on July 11, 2014. Their second song, “Geronimo,” spent three weeks at the top of the ARIA Singles Chart and was awarded a 5-platinum certification.

The Sheppard siblings were born and raised in Papua New Guinea’s capital city of Port Moresby. George and Amy Sheppard founded the duo Sheppard in 2009. Amy had requested assistance with a music assignment: “I had to compose a song, and I had put off adding harmonies until the last minute. There was only George at home “. George (born 21 October 1987) played the piano and sang lead for the pair, with Amy (born 22 September 1990) contributing vocals. Jay Bovino, a close friend of George’s from Sydney, joined as the group’s third songwriter and rhythm guitarist in 2011. By 2012, their six-piece lineup also includes Michael Butler on lead guitar, Jared Tredly on drums, and Emma on bass and backing vocals. The group’s parents supported the group’s early career and founded their own record company, Empire of Song; Greg was their talent manager and Linda was their tour manager.

On August 17, 2012, Sheppard and the record label, Empire of Song issued a five-track extended play with the same name that was distributed by MGM. They had already given performances at events in South Africa, London, and the US by September of that year. On the ARIA Singles Chart, the EP peaked at No. 18 in July of the following year. At the 2013 ARIA Music Awards, its first single, “Let Me Down Easy,” received a nomination for Best Independent Release. The group’s debut single, “Hold My Tongue,” the second song on the album, was released in August, however, it failed to chart. All five songs were co-written by Amy, George, and Bovino and produced by Stuart Stuart at Analog Heart Studios.

Sheppard became the first Australian band to sign with Decca Records for their international releases in March 2014. The band’s music was still distributed by MGM and released in Australia under the Empire of Song/Chugg Music label.

At the time, Stuart was producing their second album, Bombs Away, which was being recorded at Analog Heart. Released on July 11, 2014, it reached its highest point on the ARIA Albums Chart at number two. It included “lovely and charming tunes dripping with emotion and more hooks than a tuna fleet,” according to Toby Creswell of Rolling Stone (Australia), and contained “sturdy pieces that could have been made any time since the Brill Building opened its doors.” At The Metro Theatre in Sydney and the Prince of Wales Ballroom in Melbourne in April, Sheppard served as the opening act for Michael Franti & Spearhead. When Keith Urban’s Light the Fuse Tour visited Australia in June, the band served as the opening act. The second single from the album, “Something’s Missing,” was released to promote the tour and reached at No. 35 on the ARIA Singles Chart. Sheppard got seven nominations for the 2014 ARIA Music Awards in October: “Geronimo” was nominated for Song of the Year and Best Video, while “Bombs Away” was nominated for Album of the Year, Best Group, Best Independent Release, Best Pop Release, and Producer of the Year (for Stuart’s contribution) (directed by Toby Morris). Sheppard won Best Group at the awards ceremony on November 26, 2014. Midway through October, the third single from the album, “Smile,” was released; Sunrise on the Seven Network served as the program’s official debut.

Sheppard was nominated for Best Independent Release at the 2013 ARIA Music Awards for their song “Let Me Down Easy.” They were competing for awards for Best Group, Album of the Year, Best Independent Release, Best Pop Release, Song of the Year, Producer of the Year, and Best Video at the 2014 presentation.

Sheppard provided the halftime show for the 2020 AFL Championship. Additionally, the band played before game two of the 2021 State of Origin Series.
