Sheryl Crow Biography

Sheryl Crow, whose full name is Sheryl Suzanne Crow, is an American singer recognized for her raspy vocals, rock-and-roll rhythm, and country guitar playing. She is very well known for her famous hits “All I wanna Do” and “Real Gone”.

Crow was born in Kennett, Missouri, a small farming community across the Mississippi River from Memphis, Tennessee, on February 11, 1962. She grew up in a house filled with music. On weekends, her mother and father played piano and trumpet in jazz ensembles, respectively. Crow began playing the piano at the age of five and was able to play by ear by the age of six. She wrote her first song at the age of thirteen. She learnt to play guitar while in high school by playing in local rock bands. She majored in music composition, performing, and education at the University of Missouri in Columbia. She moved to St. Louis after graduating in 1984, where she taught music to children with special needs.

Crow traveled to Los Angeles in 1986 to pursue her dream of making it big in the music industry. She charmed her way into auditions for a tour with Michael Jackson and was chosen to accompany his Bad World Tour based on a video audition. She spent two years traveling with Michael Jackson and his entourage. She continued to write songs during this time, and her tunes were covered by singers including Wynonna Judd and Eric Clapton.

Crow has worked as a backup singer for a variety of well-known artists, including Foreigner, Stevie Wonder, Rod Stewart, Sting, and Don Henley. Crow was encouraged to perform her own music by Henley.

Crow began meeting with songwriters on Tuesday nights, who gathered in a warehouse for creative sessions. The group, which later became known as the Tuesday Night Music Club, tried to finish a song every night before going home. They wrote “Leaving Las Vegas” the first time she attended a session, one of the original works that would subsequently be included on her debut album, Tuesday Night Music Club (1993). Crow’s album received considerable critical acclaim, but it was the massive popularity of “All I Wanna Do” that sent him to the top of the charts. She won three Grammy Awards in 1994 for “All I Wanna Do,” including best record, best pop vocal performance by a female, and best new artist.

Sheryl Crow, Crow’s second album, was released in 1996. Crow received a Grammy for best rock album and another for best female rock vocal performance for the song “If It Makes You Happy” as a result of this work. The Globe Sessions (1998) won a Grammy for best rock album, and the tune “There Goes the Neighborhood” took home the award for best female rock vocal performance. Crow continued to perform and win awards well into the twenty-first century. The Grammy-winning “Steve McQueen” and the popular tune “Soak Up the Sun” were featured on C’mon, C’mon (2002).

Wildflower (2005), a compilation of introspective songs; Detours (2008), a mix of socially concerned songs and personal reminiscences; and 100 Miles from Memphis (2010), a collaborative effort with Justin Timberlake and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, were among her other albums. Crow returned to her former work with Be Myself (2017) after the country album Feels Like Home (2013). Crow collaborated with a number of musicians on her 11th studio album, Threads (2019), including Stevie Nicks, Willie Nelson, and Bonnie Raitt.

Crow was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006 and had treatment. She went on to co-author the booklet If It Makes You Healthy: More Than 100 Delicious Seasonal Recipes (2011). In 2022, a documentary about her life and career, Sheryl, was released.
