Snoop Dogg (formerly Snoop Doggy Dogg and briefly Snoop Lion) is an American rapper, songwriter, media personality, actor, and entrepreneur. Dr. Dre‘s initial solo single, “Deep Cover,” and then Dre’s debut solo album, The Chronic, launched his career in 1992. Broadus has sold over 23 million records in the United States and 35 million internationally since his debut.

He was born in Long Beach, California, on October 20, 1971. Snoop created homemade tapes with his two cousins, Nate Dogg and Lil’ 12 Dead, and friend Warren G; the four called their group 213 after the area code of their hometown of Long Beach at the time. Snoop’s early solo freestyles over En Vogue’s “Hold On” appeared on a mixtape that ended up in the hands of Dr. Dre, who was so taken with the sample that he invited Snoop to audition.

Doggystyle, Snoop Dog’s debut solo album, was released by Death Row Records in November 1993 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts. Doggystyle was certified quadruple-platinum in 1994 after selling 800,000 copies in its first week and included multiple hit singles, including “What’s My Name?” and “Gin & Juice.” Broadus’ music for the short film Murder Was the Case, starring Snoop Dogg, was released by Death Row Records in 1994. His second album, Tha Doggfather, debuted at number one on both charts in 1996, with the lead single “Snoop’s Upside Ya Head.” The album was certified double-platinum the following year.

Broadus signed with No Limit Records after leaving Death Row Records in January 1998, and released three Snoop albums: Da Game Is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told (1998), No Limit Top Dogg (1999), and Tha Last Meal (2001). (2000). Paid tha Cost to Be da Boss was released in 2002 by Priority/Capitol/EMI Records. In 2004, he joined with Geffen Records and released R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece, Tha Blue Carpet Treatment, and Ego Trippin’, his next three albums. Malice ‘n Wonderland was released by Priority Records in 2009, followed by Doggumentary in 2011. Snoop Dogg has appeared in films and hosted television shows such as Doggy Fizzle Televizzle, Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood, and Dogg After Dark, among others. He also coaches a high school football squad and a youth football league. He was hired as the chairman of a revitalised Priority Records by EMI in September 2009.

After a vacation to Jamaica in 2012, he declared his conversion to Rastafari and adopted the moniker Snoop Lion. In early 2013, he published the reggae album Reincarnated, as well as a documentary of the same name about his Jamaican experience. Bush, his 13th studio album, was released in May 2015, marking the return of the Snoop Dogg moniker. Coolaid, his 14th solo studio album, was released in July of 2016. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame’s celebrity wing the night before WrestleMania 32 in Arlington, Texas, in March 2016, after making multiple appearances for the business, notably as master of ceremonies before a match at WrestleMania XXIV. Snoop Dogg declared himself a “born-again Christian” in 2018 and released his first gospel album, Bible of Love.

Snoop Dogg was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on November 19, 2018. I Wanna Thank Me, his eighteenth solo album, was released in 2019. Snoop Dogg bought Death Row Records from MNRK Music Group (previously eOne Music) in 2022 and released BODR, his 19th studio album. Snoop has had 17 Grammy nominations without a win.
