Stone Temple Pilots Biography

Stone Temple Pilots (abbreviated as STP) is an American rock band from San Diego, California, composed of Scott Weiland (lead vocals), brothers Dean (guitar) and Robert DeLeo (bass and backing vocals), and Eric Kretz (drums). From its inception in 1989 until Weiland’s dismissal in February 2013, the band‘s lineup remained intact. Chester Bennington, the lead singer of Linkin Park, joined the band in May 2013 and left amicably in November 2015. The band held an online audition for a new lead vocalist in 2016, and on November 14, 2017, they introduced Jeff Gutt as the new lead singer.

While they are classified as post-grunge, the Stone Temple Pilots (STP for short) have a distinct sound that is reminiscent of Led Zeppelin and the Doors. The frenzied workmanship of Robert DeLeo and his brother/lead guitarist Dean DeLeo’s riffs, in particular, gave STP a varied and psychedelic sound.

The band’s old-school sound was rounded out by drummer Eric Kretz’s languid and groovy approach, as well as Weiland’s low vocals and scenic vocals.

STP’s debut album, Core, was released in 1992, and they quickly established themselves as a rock powerhouse. Core went on to sell over eight million copies in the United States because of the success of the songs “Plush” and “Creep.” STP’s sound was despised by many critics due to their stylistic similarities to other Grunge bands, despite being commercially and fan-friendly.

The band’s first album, Core, was certified 8 platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. Before disbanding in 2003, STP went on to become one of the most commercially successful rock bands of the 1990s, selling 40 million records worldwide, including 17.5 million in the United States. Purple has had 16 top ten songs on the Billboard rock charts, with eight of them reaching No. 1, as well as one No. 1 album in 1994. The band received a Grammy for “Best Hard Rock Performance” for the song “Plush” from the album Core the following year. Stone Temple Pilots were also ranked No. 40 on VH1’s The 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock

Purple, STP’s sophomore album, was released in 1994 to tremendous commercial acclaim. The band’s biggest charting single to date, “Interstate Love Song,” was a high-energy, radio-friendly rocker that peaked at number fifteen on Billboard’s Hot 100. “Vasoline” and “Big Empty,” two more singles, also garnered a lot of rotation. With songs like “Pretty Penny,” a slow acoustic-driven ballad, you can’t help but draw analogies to Led Zeppelin.

After Purple, the Pilot’s sound became more psychedelic, and Weiland contended with a drug problem, which led to on-again, off-again legal difficulties. The band briefly disbanded in 1995, but reformed soon after, and STP issued their third album, Tiny Music… The Vatican Gift Shop has a collection of songs.Tiny Music…, the band’s third multi-platinum album, was a more frenzied record than the previous two, with songs like “Big Bang Baby” and “Trippin’ on a Hole in a Paper Heart.”

Weiland’s drug issues remained severe. Weiland went to rehab several times in 1996 and 1997, and the band went on hiatus. STP’s fourth album, No. 4, was released in 1999, after band members went on to conduct their own individual projects in 1998. The album’s mainstream song, “Sour Girl,” would be STP’s final major commercial single. The band’s album Shangri-La Dee Da was released in 2001, and STP eventually disbanded.

Filter’s Richard Patrick, the DeLeo brothers formed supergroup Army of Anyone. It has been said that the band disbanded after releasing one album. Weiland enjoyed a lot of success with his own supergroup, Velvet Revolver, which included Guns N’ Roses members.
