Temple Of The Dog Biography

Temple of the Dog, known for their hit song “Hunger Strike”, was an American rock band that was formed in Seattle, Washington in 1990. It was created by Soundgarden‘s Chris Cornell as a memorial to his friend Andrew Wood, the late lead singer of the bands Malfunkshun and Mother Love Bone. Stone Gossard played rhythm guitar, Jeff Ament played bass guitar, Mike McCready played lead guitar, and Matt Cameron played drums. Eddie Vedder joined the band as a special guest to offer lead and background vocals. Four months later, Vedder made his debut as lead vocalist on Pearl Jam‘s debut album, Ten.

Chris Cornell, the leader of Soundgarden, founded Temple of the Dog. Cornell went on to tour Europe a few days after Andrew Wood’s death, and he began writing songs in honor of his late friend. As a result, he recorded two songs, “Reach Down” and “Say Hello 2 Heaven,” as soon as he returned home from his tour. The recorded material was mellow and melodic, in contrast to Soundgarden’s explosive rock sound.

With the idea of releasing the songs as a single, Cornell approached Wood’s former Mother Love Bone comrades Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament, who were still puzzling out what to do after the death of their singer and lyricist. The partnership, according to Ament, was “a pretty nice thing at the time” since it put Gossard and him in a “band environment where we could perform and develop music.” Soundgarden (and eventually Pearl Jam) drummer Matt Cameron joined the band, as did future Pearl Jam lead guitarist Mike McCready, who was a boyhood friend of Gossard’s. Temple of the Dog is a reference to a passage in the Mother Love Bone song “Man of Golden Words,” which they took as their moniker.

The band’s only album, Temple of the Dog, was released in April 1991 by A&M Records and sold 70,000 copies in the United States at the time. Producer Rakesh “Rick” Parashar oversaw the sessions, which took place in November and December 1990 at London Bridge Studio in Seattle, Washington. Despite receiving positive reviews from music critics at the time of its release, the album did not gain widespread recognition until 1992.

The album garnered increased interest in the summer of 1992. A&M Records realized they had in their catalog what was essentially a collaboration between Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, who had both risen to mainstream attention in the months since the album’s release with their respective albums, Badmotorfinger and Ten, despite the fact that it had been released more than a year before. A&M opted to reissue the album and market “Hunger Strike” as a single, complete with a previously made music video. Because of the publicity, both the album and the song charted on Billboard, resulting in an increase in record sales. The album went on to become one of the top 100 best-selling albums of 1992, selling over a million copies and earning platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America.

Later, under the moniker M.A.C.C, McCready, Ament, Cameron, and Cornell reunited to perform Jimi Hendrix’s “Hey Baby (Land of the New Rising Sun)” for the 1993 tribute album Stone Free: A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix. Since then, the song has been a staple of the band’s live show. To commemorate the 25th anniversary of their self-titled record, the band reassembled and toured in 2016. It was the band’s only appearance on the road.
