The Animals Biography

The Animals are a rhythm and blues and rock band from Newcastle upon Tyne, England, that formed in the early 1960s. After achieving prominence in 1964, the band relocated to London. Burdon (vocals), Price (organ and keyboards), Hilton Valentine (guitar), John Steel (drums), and Bryan “Chas” Chandler (bass) made up the original lineup. The Animals were known for their gritty, bluesy sound and deep-voiced frontman Eric Burdon, as evidenced by hits like “We Gotta Get Out of This Place,” “It’s My Life,” “Don’t Bring Me Down,” “I’m Crying,” “See See Rider,” and “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” as well as their signature song and transatlantic number-one hit single “The House of the Rising Sun.” The band was a part of the British Invasion of the United States, balancing aggressive, rock-edged pop songs with rhythm-and-blues-oriented album content.

In the mid-1960s, the Animals had multiple personnel changes and suffered from bad economic management, resulting in the original incarnation’s disbandment in 1966. Under the name Eric Burdon and the Animals, Burdon assembled a mostly new lineup of musicians; the much-changed act relocated to California and found commercial success as a psychedelic and hard rock band with hits like “San Franciscan Nights,” “When I Was Young,” and “Sky Pilot” before disbanding at the end of the decade. The quartet achieved a total of ten top-20 successes in the UK Singles Chart and the US Billboard Hot 100.

The Animals had disbanded by December 1968, but their double album Love Is was published worldwide, with the hits “Ring of Fire” and “River Deep – Mountain High.”

The dissolution was attributed to a number of factors, the most well-known of which was an ill-fated Japanese tour. The trip was supposed to start in September 1968, but it was postponed until November due to visa issues. Only a few performances into the tour, the promoters (who the band had no idea were yakuza) kidnapped the band’s manager and threatened him with a gun to write a $25,000 IOU to pay the tour’s losses.

Burdon, Alan Price, Chas Chandler, Hilton Valentine, and John Steel reassembled in Newcastle for a one-off benefit concert in 1968. Later, in 1975 and 1983, they made brief comebacks. Since then, there have been other partial regroupings of the original-era members under various identities. Last Live Show, a recording of their performance at the Royal Oak Theater in Royal Oak, Michigan on November 29, 1983, was released on February 27, 2008. The reunion tour was documented in a film, but it was never released. Chandler died of an aneurysm in 1996, therefore ending any chance of a full reunion of the original lineup.

In 1994, the Animals were enshrined in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The band’s cover of “The House of the Rising Sun” was ranked 123 in Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time in 2003. On the same list, their smash single “We Gotta Get Out of This Place” from 1965 was ranked number 233. Both tracks are listed among the 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
