The Bangles – Biography, Songs, Albums, Discography & Facts

The Bangles Biography

The Bangles are an all-female rock group that was formed in 1981 and lasted until 1999. They had a string of successful single releases in the 1980s and then came back a decade later to keep making music. They are well known for their top hits “Eternal Flame” and “Walk Like an Egyptian”.

In December 1980 in Los Angeles, singer and guitarist Susanna Hoffs met Debbi and Vicki Peterson. The group started performing in the LA underground music scene under the moniker The Bangs. They released their first song, “Getting Out Of Hand,” in 1981. After bassist Annette Zilinskas joined the band, the trio started working on their debut EP, which would be released the following year. A few weeks before the release of the “The Real World” EP in 1982, the band changed their name from The Bangs to Bangles due to legal concerns. Soon after, Zilinskas quit the group; Michael Steele took his place.

The Bangles’ debut studio album, “All Over the Place,” was made available by Columbia Records in May 1984. The album included two singles and earned favorable reviews. Leonard Nimoy appeared in the music video for the song “Liverpool,” which promoted the band.

Prince, who had written the song “Manic Monday” for another band but presented it to the band instead, was one of those who learned about the group. In the US, UK, and German charts, the song quickly reached number 2. The song was included on “Different Light,” their second studio album, which was released in the US in January 1986. After Columbia Records concentrated on the release of singles that featured her voice, Hoffs was quickly overtaking the other band members in the media’s perception of the group. They released the top-five album “Everything,” which had the number-one hit “Eternal Flame,” on October 18th, 1988. The band’s connection had been breaking down, and shortly the group disbanded.

The other members of the band joined other bands while Hoffs continued to seek a solo career. During this time, Hoffs married the filmmaker Jay Roach, who also commissioned her and Vicki Peterson to compose a song for his next movie, “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.” The remaining members of the band joined forces in 1998 to record the song “Get The Girl,” and the group formally reformed in 1999 to release it. The Bangles’ fourth studio album, “Doll Revolution,” which was recorded over the period of three years beginning in 2000, was released on September 9, 2003. Although the album did well in Germany, it did not have much success in the US or the UK.

In 2009, The Bangles started creating a new album. The Bangles’ fifth studio album, “Sweetheart of the Sun,” was released on September 27, 2011. The band performed a collection of their biggest hits on tour in 2013 after touring throughout 2011 to promote the album.
