The Dandy Warhols Biography

The Dandy Warhols is an American alternative rock band that was founded in 1994 in Portland, Oregon, by guitarist Peter Holmström and singer-guitarist Courtney Taylor-Taylor. Later, drummer Eric Hedford and keyboardist Zia McCabe joined them. In 1998, Hedford resigned, and Taylor-cousin Taylor’s Brent DeBoer took his position. The name of the group is a pun on American pop artist Andy Warhol.

The band became well-known after signing with Capitol Records and releasing their first album on a big label,…The Dandy Warhols Come Down, in 1997. The song “Bohemian Like You,” which was featured in a Vodafone commercial, gave the band extensive exposure and helped them reach new heights of success in 2001. The San Francisco psychedelic band The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols were both included in the 2004 documentary Dig! To date, they have released 27 singles, six EPs, two compilation albums, and ten studio albums.

Midway through 1993, Peter Holmstrom (guitar) coerced buddy Courtney Taylor (vocals/guitar) into starting a band. As a result, this Portland, Oregon, USA, quartet was born. The band, which had previously gone by the name Andy Warhol’s Wet Dream, later changed its name to the Dandy Warhols and quickly established itself alongside rivals and friends the Brian Jonestown Massacre on the Portland club scene (a love/hate relationship that was later explored in Ondi Timoner’s acclaimed documentary, Dig!). The band’s live performances traveled on the same astral realm as early Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett, and Hawkwind because they tapped into the trippier side of psychedelic rock. For the Portland record company Tim/Kerr, the Dandy Warhols recorded Dandys Rule OK? in 1995. Their gloomy debut, which included references to Lou Reed (‘(Tony, This Song Is Called) Lou Weed’) and Andy Warhol’s remark about fame in a lengthy 16-minute jam (‘It’s A Fast-Driving Rave Up With The Dandy Warhols’), was schooled in a lot of atmospherics.

The mischievous quintet took advantage of the major-label bidding war that the Dandy Warhols’ live performances and impressive debut quickly sparked by taking as many A&R representatives to dinner as they could. Come Down was the first album the band released after signing with Capitol Records. On songs like “Be-In” and “Pete International Airport,” they delve into “shoegazing” space-rock that is evocative of Spiritualized and My Bloody Valentine. They also demonstrate a talent for simple garage rock on “Cool As Kim Deal.” The song that garnered the most attention was “Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth,” which purported to critique heroin addiction but instead dismissed it as being simply out-of-date. Famed photographer David LaChappelle afterward created a video.

The Dandy Warhols went on tour as Teenage Fanclub and Radiohead‘s supporting act before returning to the studio in early 1999. On the band’s third album, Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia, Brent De Boer took Hedford’s position. The catchy song “Bohemian Like You” from this album served as the group’s commercial breakthrough, scoring on college radio in the US and hitting the UK Top 10 after appearing in a Vodafone mobile phone commercial. The sequel Welcome To The Monkey House marked a significant change in course. The disorganized sloppiness and sloppy guitar chords were replaced with sophisticated produced tracks, an abundance of keyboards, and a distinct 80s vibe. Nick Rhodes, a co-producer and former keyboardist for Duran Duran, had an impact on the album’s sound. For their 2005 album Odditorium Or Warlords Of Mars, the band made the right decision to drop this approach and return to a more comfortable sound.
