The Doors Biography

The Doors were an American rock band that formed in Los Angeles in 1965, with Jim Morrison on vocals, Ray Manzarek on keyboards, Robby Krieger on guitar, and John Densmore on drums. Morrison’s songs and voice, as well as his chaotic stage presence, made them one of the most controversial and influential rock acts of the 1960s, and the group is largely considered as an integral component of the era’s counterculture.

The Doors of Perception is the title of Aldous Huxley’s book, which is itself a reference to a statement by William Blake. The Doors with Morrison recorded six albums in five years after joining with Elektra Records in 1966, some of which are considered among the best of all time, including their self-titled debut (1967), Strange Days (1967), and L.A. Woman (1971). The Doors were one of the most popular bands at the time, selling over 4 million albums and nearly 8 million singles in the United States by 1972.

The Doors recorded their self-titled debut album at Sunset Sound Studios in August 1966. In the first week of January 1967, the record was officially released. It featured many popular songs from their repertory, including the nearly 12-minute musical drama “The End,” which had sold more than 13 million copies as of 2015. Mark Abramson filmed a promo film for the lead single “Break On Through (To the Other Side)” in November 1966. The ensemble has had multiple television appearances, including miming to a repeat of “Break On Through” on Shebang, a Los Angeles television show. The group played their single “Break On Through” on The Clay Cole Show (which aired on Saturday evenings at 6 p.m. on WPIX Channel 11 in New York City) in early 1967. Since the record was merely a minor hit, the band moved on to “Light My Fire,” which became Elektra Records’ first number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, selling over one million copies.

Morrison died in 1971 under mysterious circumstances. The band remained a trio until 1973, when it disbanded. In the 1970s, they recorded three more albums, two of which incorporated Morrison’s earlier recordings, and they rejoined on stage in various configurations over the decades. Manzarek, Krieger, and vocalist Ian Astbury of the Cult formed “The Doors of the 21st Century” in 2002. Densmore and the Morrison estate were successful in their lawsuit against them for using the band’s name. They went by the moniker Manzarek–Krieger after a brief stint as Riders on the Storm, and toured until Manzarek’s death in 2013.

The Doors were the first American band to have eight gold albums in a row. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, they have sold over 100 million albums worldwide, making them one of the best-selling bands of all time. The Doors have been named one of the best musicians of all time by publications such as Rolling Stone, which ranked them 41st on their “100 Greatest Artists of All Time” list. They were enshrined in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.
