The Four Seasons Biography

The Four Seasons, known for the hit song December, 1963, was formed in 1962 with original band members Frankie Vallii as the lead singer, Bob Guadio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi. Frankie is the only original band member still playing with the group, although Robby Robinson, who joined in 1979, has had a nearly 40 year run with the band. The current lineup consists twelve additional artists who contribute to the group. The group has sold over 100,000,000 units.

Frankie started with a group called The Four Lovers in 1956 and signed with RCA. He didn’t achieve any major hits under RCA, and they released him, after which he would sign with Capital. Everything changed when Frankie met Bob Crew, a record producer and label owner. Bob Guido joined and by 1962 they rebranded as The Four Seasons. It’s said the name was inspired after looking outside their window and seeing the sign for New York’s best known restaurant, named “The Four Seasons.”

They released their first album, Sherry, in September of 1962. It quickly climbed the charts to #1 and sold over 2,000,000 copies. Bob Crew, the albums producer, famously decided to pay for studio time to pay for studio time instead of his rent. The album peaked and #6 on the Billboard Top 100 and would remain their top selling album and would slide into pop culture history. The Four Seasons would go on to release 21 Studio Albums and would release numerous songs that would be considered “classic oldies”, including Sherry, Big Girls Don’t Cry, Walk Like A Man, Rag Doll and Can’t Take My Eyes Off You — among others.

When The British Invasion happened around 1964, along with The Beach Boys, they were among the few US groups to continue to place at the top of the charts. Between February 1964 to 1965 they had nine hit singles. By 1968 they had eighteen hit records.

When Frankie enjoyed renewed success in the 1975 with several Top 40 Hits, Bob Guido was inspired to resuscitate The Four Seasons, with Frankie. So he wrote two of their biggest hits with his future wife, “Who Loves You” and “December, 1963.” This put the band back in the spotlight and by 1978 Frankie’s solo performance of Grease was included in the soundtrack two times.

Jersey Boys, the Tony-award winning musical, brought renewed interest in the band. It chronicles the music and life of Frankie and his crew. It was adapted into a movie by Clint Eastwood in 2014.

The original group members were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 by Bob Crew. “During their 20 year career, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons have sold over 80 million records making them the most long-lived and successful while male vocal group,” he said in 1990 while introducing the group. Frankie would go on to say that being given the award was one of his greatest honors.
