The Jackson Five Biography
The Jackson Five is an American musical group made up of members of the Jackson family (sometimes referred to as the Jacksons later on). Joe Jackson, along with his brothers Jackie, Tito, and Jermaine, started the group in Gary, Indiana, in 1964. Soon after, younger brothers Marlon and Michael joined.
Joe Jackson, the father of the five Jackson brothers, encouraged their musical interests. When a string on Tito’s guitar broke in 1964, Joe spotted him playing with it and was so thrilled that he decided to get him his own instrument. In 1965, Tito, Jermaine, and Jackie started their own band with the help of boyhood friends Reynaud Jones and Milford Hite, who played keyboards and drums, and 5-year-old Michael, who played congas. When Evelyn LaHaie recommended that the group call itself the Jackson Five Singing Group in August 1965, Marlon joined on tambourine.
The quartet took first place in a talent contest at Theodore Roosevelt High School in Gary in 1966. “My Girl” by the Temptations was performed by Jermaine, while “Barefootin'” by Robert Parker was performed by Michael. On the Chitlin’ Circuit, The Jackson 5 performed in talent competitions and nightclubs. In 1967, they signed with Steeltown Records and put out two singles.
They signed with Motown after leaving Steeltown Records in 1968, where they were the first group to make their debut with four songs that reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in a row: “I Want You Back,” “ABC,” “The Love You Save,” and “I’ll Be There.” They also managed to land sixteen Top-40 songs. Early in 1976, the trio switched from Motown to Epic Records, with the exception of Jermaine, who was replaced by Randy, the youngest brother. Between 1976 and 1981, they put out four studio albums and one live album at Epic, including the popular albums Triumph (1980) and Destiny (1978), as well as the songs “Can You Feel It,” “Enjoy Yourself,” and “Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground).
The most popular of the brothers’ solo albums was Michael’s. Jermaine got back together with the group in 1983 to play on the Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever TV special.The Victory album was released the next year, and it was followed by a lengthy tour that included songs from Michael’s solo albums. Michael and Marlon left the band following the Victory tour. Before being let go by their label, the remaining four in 1989 recorded the unpopular 2300 Jackson Street album. The Jackson family came together in 2001 for Michael’s 30th Anniversary Celebration TV special. Following Michael’s passing in 2012, the four eldest brothers set off on their Unity Tour, and they had several significant performances scheduled for 2017.
The Jackson 5 have reportedly sold more than 100 million records worldwide, according to some reports.The Jacksons earned the brothers a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1980. In 1997, they were admitted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In addition to being inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame with “I’ll Be There,” two of the band’s songs—”ABC” and “I Want You Back”—are listed among the 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
