The Mamas Biography

The Mamas and the Papas were a Los Angeles, California-based American folk rock vocal group who recorded and performed from 1965 to 1968. The band was a defining force in the 1960s counterculture music scene. The team included Americans John Phillips, Cass Elliot, and Michelle Phillips, as well as Canadian Denny Doherty. Their sound was built on vocal harmonies orchestrated by John Phillips, the group’s songwriter, pianist, and leader, who adapted folk to the early 1960s new beat style.

Over the course of four years, The Mamas & the Papas recorded five studio albums and 17 singles, six of which charted in the top ten on Billboard, and sold nearly 40 million records worldwide. For their services to the music industry, the band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. The band reformed temporarily in 1971 to record the album People Like Us, but by then they had stopped travelling and playing. “California Dreamin’,” “Monday, Monday,” and “Dedicated to the One I Love” are among their most popular tracks.

The Mamas and Papas’ turmoil began before they were even a group. John, who had divorced his first wife to marry Michelle, was excited for the duo to perform with tenor Denny Doherty. But when Elliot, another star in New York City’s music scene, expressed interest, John opposed.

The Mamas and the Papas made their first recording as background vocalists on McGuire’s album This Precious Time, despite having already had a single by the time the album was published in December 1965. The single “Go Where You Wanna Go,” which was released in limited quantities in November, did not chart.

If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears (1966) was a big hit for them. They were one of the first well-known groups to have men and women singing together, a situation that led to romantic anger in their instance. Elliot had feelings for Doherty, but he wasn’t interested in her as a romantic companion. The Mamas & the Papas peaked at No. 4 in the US and No. 24 in the UK, continuing the band’s success. “I Saw Her Again” was released as a single in June 1966 and reached No. 5 in the US and No. 11 in the UK.

Michelle believed in free love, therefore her marriage to John did not prevent her from having an affair with Doherty (among others).

The Mamas and the Papas have a tenuous link to Charles Manson and his 1969 murder spree. Manson had been to one of Elliot’s gatherings. And, after the Manson Family murdered Sharon Tate and others, Tate’s husband, Roman Polanski, believed John was the murderer, driven by vengeance because Polanski had slept with Michelle.

The Mamas and Papas reformed to record another album, but their heyday had passed, and People Like Us (1971) was a flop.

People Like Us, the Mamas & the Papas’ last album of new material, was released in November 1971. The lone single, “Step Out,” peaked at No. 81 in the United States. The album reached at No. 84 on the Billboard 200, making it the Mamas & Papas’ only non-top-20 album in the United States. In the United Kingdom, neither the single nor the album charted. With the band’s contractual responsibilities met, the separation was final.
