The Mighty Mighty Bosstones Biography

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones (also known as The Bosstones and often stylized as The Mighty Mighty BossToneS) were a Boston, Massachusetts-based ska punk band that formed in 1983. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones were one of the forerunners of the American ska movement, which burst in the mid-1990s and provided the Boston band with their first taste of commercial success.

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones Members initially were Tim Bridewell (trumpet), Dicky Barrett (vocals), Nate Albert (guitar), Joe Gittleman (bass), Josh Dalsimer (drums), and Tim “Johnny Vegas” Burton (saxophone), together with dancer Ben Carr. Taang! Records published the band’s debut album, Devils Night Out, in 1990.The Bosstones’ sound was influenced by Jamaican ska, a horn-driven form of reggae that first gained popularity in the 1960s and was popularized in the early 1980s by British bands such as Madness and English Beat. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones’ take on ska was distinct in that it included strong metal and punk influences.

The Bosstones built a cult following through their high-octane live shows, which often saw the band dressed in plaid suits. For much of the 1990s, they performed over 300 gigs every year. The Bosstones’ accessibility and allegiance to their fans contrasted sharply with the standoffishness of the time’s popular grunge bands, and served to foster fanatical fandom.

The Bosstones signed to Mercury Records in 1993 after a lineup change that included drummer Joe Sirois, saxophone Kevin Lenear, and trombone Dennis Brockenborough, with Bridewell and Dalsimer departing. They had their first commercial success in 1995, when they were cast in the film Clueless. The Bosstones perform two songs in the film as a house-party band: “Someday I Suppose” and “Where’d You Go?”

In 1997, as ska-influenced bands like No Doubt and Sublime dominated the charts, interest in the Bosstones grew. Let’s Face It (1997) was the band’s best-selling album, and the single “The Impression That I Get” came close to reaching the top of the current rock charts.”The Impression That I Get,” an infectious up-tempo number with reggae guitars and blurting horns, charmed listeners with its decidedly self-effacing lyrical approach, in which the narrator muses about his ability to face adversity: “I’m not a coward, I’ve just never been tested / I’d like to think that if I were, I’d pass.” Barrett lets out a deep heavy-metal growl that leads into the chorus as the music reaches a thunderous peak.

Following the success of Let’s Face It, the Bosstones’ roster shifted again, with Lenear and Albert departing, the latter to complete his degree at Brown University; the band replaced them with Roman Fleysher (saxophone) and Lawrence Katz (guitar). The Bosstones played before festival-sized crowds as part of the Lollapalooza Tour during the height of the ska craze, but as interest in the musical movement waned, the band returned to more familiar club settings. The Bosstones released Live at the Middle East in 1998, which was recorded at the band’s annual five-night “Hometown Throw-down” in Boston.

The Bosstones maintained their followers’ love, commitment, and adoration despite their underappreciation for their significant musical influence.
