The Notorious B.I.G. Biography

Christopher George Latore Wallace was an American rapper and composer who went by the stage names the Notorious B.I.G., Biggie Smalls, or simply Biggie. He is widely regarded as one of the best rappers of all time, with roots in the New York rap scene and gangsta rap traditions. Wallace became noted for his laid-back lyrical style, which helped to balance the poems’ generally depressing subject. His music was frequently semi-autobiographical, depicting adversity and criminality, as well as revelry and happiness. “Hypnotize” and “Big Poppa” are two of his top hits.

Wallace, who was born on May 21, 1972 in Brooklyn, New York City, joined Sean “Puffy” Combs’ Bad Boy Records when it first opened in 1993, and achieved recognition by appearing on numerous other artists’ hits that year. Ready to Die (1994), his debut album, received considerable critical praise and featured his hallmark songs “Juicy” and “Big Poppa.” The album elevated him to the forefront of East Coast hip hop, restoring New York’s prominence at a period when the West Coast hip hop scene dominated the genre. Wallace was named Rapper of the Year at the 1995 Billboard Music Awards. The next year, he charted success with his protégé group Junior M.A.F.I.A., which consisted of himself and old friends, including Lil’ Kim.

Wallace married R&B singer Faith Evans on August 4, 1994, eight days after meeting her during a Bad Boy photoshoot. Wallace’s first pop chart hit as a solo artist came five days later with the double A-side “Juicy / Unbelievable,” which reached No. 27 as the lead single off his debut album.

On September 13, 1994, the film Ready to Die was released. It was certified four times platinum after reaching No. 13 on the Billboard 200 chart. At a time when West Coast hip hop ruled the US charts, the album brought attention back to East Coast hip hop. It earned positive reviews and has been widely praised in the aftermath. In addition to “Juicy,” the album generated two successful singles: “Big Poppa,” which went platinum and reached No. 1 on the US rap chart, and “One More Chance,” which sold 1.1 million copies in 1995.Busta Rhymes claimed to have witnessed Wallace handing out free copies of Ready to Die from his home, describing it as “his way of marketing himself.

Wallace became embroiled in the rising East Coast–West Coast hip hop dispute while recording his second album in 1996. As a result of Wallace’s public dispute with Tupac Shakur, allegations of involvement in Shakur’s murder by criminal forces surrounding the Bad Boy group circulated following his death in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas in September 1996. Wallace was killed in a drive-by shooting while visiting Los Angeles on March 9, 1997, six months after Shakur’s killing. The perpetrator is still unknown. Wallace’s second album, Life After Death, was released two weeks later as a double album. It went to number one on the Billboard 200 and was eventually certified as a diamond in the United States.

Wallace had registered sales of over 28 million copies in the United States, including 21 million albums, after two further posthumous albums were published. He has been dubbed the “best rapper who ever lived” by Rolling Stone and the “greatest rapper of all time” by Billboard. In its 150th issue, The Source magazine rated him the best rapper of all time. MTV ranked him third on their list of the Greatest MCs of All Time in 2006, saying him “the most skilled ever on the mic.” He will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2020.

Wallace is the subject of a 2009 biographical film starring rapper Jamal Woolard as Wallace. George Tillman Jr. directed the picture, which was released by Fox Searchlight Pictures. Sean Combs, Wallace’s previous managers Wayne Barrow and Mark Pitts, as well as Voletta Wallace, were among the producers. After a man was shot in the parking lot before the screening, the movie’s premiere at the Grand 18 theater in Greensboro, North Carolina was postponed on January 16, 2009. The film garnered mixed reviews and made more than $44 million internationally.
