The Offspring Biography

The Offspring is a Garden Grove, California-based rock band that was formed in 1984. The band’s roster is lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Bryan “Dexter” Holland, bassist Todd Morse, and lead guitarist Kevin “Noodles” Wasserman, who formed the band under the name Manic Subsidal. They’ve published ten studio albums and gone through several band changes throughout the course of their 38-year career, the most notable of which was with their drummers. Ron Welty, who took over for original drummer James Lilja in 1987 and stayed with the band for 16 years, was replaced by Atom Willard in 2003, and then by former drummer Pete Parada four years later. Gregory “Greg K.” Kriesel, one of the Offspring’s co-founders, was the band’s bassist until 2018, when he was fired due to business disagreements. Holland is the only original member still alive. Todd Morse of H2O, who had been the Offspring’s touring guitarist since 2009, took Kriesel’s position.

In 1989, the Offspring signed a deal with the small punk label ‘Nemesis,’ and began recording in a professional studio. Their debut album, ‘Baghdad,’ featured the title song (later reworded to Tehran to tie in with the gulf war and re-recorded for the self-titled album), as well as a punk rendition of Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Hey Joe’ and ‘Get It Right,’ which was later re-recorded and released for the 1992 album ‘Ignition.’

The band later published their first album on the label, which was a hit despite its poor recording quality. The Ramones had pioneered a new form of music with their cutting edge lyrics and eclectic style years before. Dexter’s label, Nitro Records, has released the album.

Despite all of the tumult that had preceded it, 1995 marked a watershed moment in the Offspring’s career. The band’s debut album, ‘Americana,’ had a mixed response. While many of the songs on the album are traditional Offspring fare, a couple of them were decidedly more “commercial” than usual. As a result of the split within the scene, more prominent bands like ‘Green Day‘ and The Offspring have found themselves juggling between mainstream and punk followers, with both side likely to quit their music if their categorization didn’t suit.

Along with fellow California punk bands Green Day and Rancid, The Offspring is generally credited with revitalizing public interest in punk rock in the 1990s.They have sold over 40 million albums worldwide, making them one of the most successful punk rock bands ever. The Offspring signed with Epitaph Records and released two albums for the indie label, Ignition (1992) and Smash (19934), after gaining a local following with their early releases, including their 1989 self-titled debut album and the vinyl-only EP Baghdad (1991).

Smash, which featured the band’s first major hit “Come Out and Play,” pushed punk rock into the mainstream and is one of the best-selling independent record labels, selling over eleven million copies worldwide. The popularity of Smash drew the attention of major labels, notably Columbia Records, which signed The Offspring in 1996. Their debut album for the label, Ixnay on the Hombre (1997), was not as successful as its predecessor, but it won critical acclaim and gold and platinum accolades. Americana (1998), the band’s fifth album, recaptured their prior level of fame, receiving MTV and radio support and selling over five million copies in the United States. The Offspring has since released five more albums: Conspiracy of One (2000), Splinter (2003), Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace (2008), Days Go By (2012) and Let the Bad Times Roll (2021).
