Chart Performance: Pop (#1); 1960 and 1962

Story Behind The Song By Harris Sterling

Few recordings have matched the impact of The Twist. More than a successful single, it launched a national dance craze and achieved one of the most unusual chart records of the rock era.

The song was written by Hank Ballard, who first recorded it with The Midnighters in 1959. While Ballard introduced the dance, it was Chubby Checker’s version that brought it to a mass audience. Signed to Cameo-Parkway Records, Checker recorded the song at the encouragement of Dick Clark, who believed it had strong crossover potential.

Released in 1960, The Twist quickly reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Checker’s appearance on American Bandstand helped popularize the dance, which required no partner contact and appealed to teenage viewers.

In 1962, amid renewed interest in the dance, the record returned to #1, making it the only song to top the Hot 100 in two separate chart runs.

Built on a steady rhythm and blues groove, the recording features a strong backbeat and simple, direct lyrics that function as dance instructions. The Twist sparked a wave of dance-oriented hits throughout the early 1960s and remains one of the defining singles of the era.
