Chart Performance: Pop (#2) and R&B (#1); 1959
Story Behind The Song By Harris Sterling
In 1959, The Drifters released There Goes My Baby, a recording that marked a turning point in rhythm and blues production. Written by Ben E. King, Lover Patterson, George Treadwell, and Jerry Leiber, the song introduced a more orchestral approach to R&B.
Produced by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, the track featured strings, Latin-influenced rhythms, and a prominent violin line—an unusual choice for R&B at the time. Released in the spring of 1959, There Goes My Baby reached #1 on the R&B chart and climbed to #2 on the Billboard Pop chart.
The lyric captures the moment of seeing a former love pass by with someone new. Rather than confrontation, the narrator expresses quiet heartbreak and resignation.
There Goes My Baby became one of The Drifters’ signature recordings and is widely regarded as an early example of the evolving “uptown” R&B sound that would shape the 1960s.
