In October 2002, Kanye West was involved in a serious car accident that left him with a fractured jaw. While recovering, his jaw was wired shut, but he continued working on music. The result was Through the Wire, his debut single.
Written and produced by West, the track prominently samples Chaka Khan’s 1985 hit Through the Fire. Despite recording with his jaw wired shut, West delivered the vocal performance that would introduce him as a solo artist.
Released in early 2003 and later included on his 2004 album The College Dropout, Through the Wire reached the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 and established West as both a producer and performer.
The lyric recounts the accident and recovery, reflecting determination and resilience. Rather than presenting himself as invulnerable, West details physical pain and uncertainty while emphasizing his commitment to his career.
Through the Wire became a defining early moment in Kanye West’s career and set the tone for the autobiographical themes explored throughout The College Dropout.

Harris also led Madacy’s strategy for the licensing of its entire music catalogue to Apple for their launch of the IPOD.
In 2011, Harris co-founded Starting Five Media, a company that specializes in recording and licensing custom renditions of popular songs as well as clearing the rights to the music composition for use by their clients in media projects.
Harris has negotiated publishing and master recording rights for many Top 40 songs for use in various media projects, TV Commercials and more.
