Toto, known for their hit song Africa, was formed in 1977 in Los Angeles with original band members Bobby Kimball, Steve Lukather, David Paich, Steve Porcaro, David Hungate and Jeff Porcaro. The current lineup consists of original band members Steve Lukather and David Paich and newcomer Steve Porcaro who first joined in 1986.

Their music is a combination of Rock, Pop and Jazz fusion. According to their website, “It is not an exaggeration to estimate that 95% of the world’s population has heard a performance by a member of TOTO.”

Toto released their first album, the self-titled Toto, in 1978. The album itself placed in the Top 40 (#9 on the US Billboard 100 and #37 on the UK Albums Chart). Three of the songs (Hold The Line, I’ll Supply Love and Georgy Porgy), placed in the Top 40. The album moved over 2,500,000 units worldwide.

Toto IV, released April 8th 1982, was their most successful album to date and highest selling album. It sold almost 12,000,000 units worldwide. Thanks to the success of this album, the group placed back in the Top 10 in early 1983 in both the United States and UK. The release included their only #1 Hit, Africa. This is also their most recognizable song and it continues to be widely listened to forty years after first hitting the airwaves.

They released 14 studio albums between 1978 and 2018 and the band has sold over 40,000,000 Albums worldwide. Toto had four albums in the Top 40, (Toto, Hydra and Toto IV, Fahrenheit) and an additional four in the Top 100. For singles, they had five in the Top 40, four in the Top 100 and 1 in the Top 200.

The band has won six awards, including Producer of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Vocal Arrangement for Two Or More Voices and Album of the Year. They also were awarded the Crystal Globe Award for selling more than 5,000,000 records outside their home country.

Their latest studio release (as of 2022) was Toto XIV. It debuted in the Top 40 in 9 countries and was their most successful album in the US and UK since 1988. They are one of only a handful of bands from the 70’s that have enjoyed a multi-generational fan base.

Lead singer David Paich sang the lead vocals for Africa. He stayed with the band from 1977 until 2004, took a hiatus until ultimately returning to the band in 2010. Paich has won an Emmy Award and six Grammy Awards

Bobby Kimball, Lead Singer and original band member from 1977 – 1984, voiced the iconic chorus in Africa. He rejoined the band for ten years between 1998 through 2008. He contributed to seven studio albums for Toto and released three solo albums, one live album and collaborated on many others.
