Story Behind The Song By Harris Sterling

In the late 1990s, Australian duo Savage Garden achieved international success with their self-titled debut album. Among its most enduring singles was Truly Madly Deeply, written by Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones.

The song was released internationally in 1997 and gained momentum in the United States the following year. In early 1998, Truly Madly Deeply reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and also topped the Adult Contemporary chart. Its extended run on radio helped establish Savage Garden as a major pop act.

Built around a soft pop arrangement featuring acoustic guitar and restrained production, the recording emphasizes Hayes’ clear vocal delivery.

The lyric centers on devotion and emotional commitment. Rather than elaborate imagery, the message is direct, expressing the desire to remain close and supportive through life’s changes.

Truly Madly Deeply became Savage Garden’s signature ballad and remains one of the defining pop love songs of the decade.
