US Top 40 Singles For The Week Ending December 5, 1998
EXTREME CHANGES THIS WEEK: To preserve the notion of the former Billboard Hot 100 Singles Charts, the new “Top 40 Tracks” was introduced this week of December 5, 1998. This chart debuted in the issue dated December 5, 1998, when Billboard changed the airplay profile of the pop-heavy Hot 100 Airplay chart to incorporate more R&B, country, and rock stations to its radio panel.
The Top 40 Tracks was compiled by measuring audience impressions (based on a station’s ratings and when a song is played) from Mainstream Top 40, Rhythmic Top 40, and Adult Top 40 radio stations.
In other words, the amount of hip-hop, soul, R&B and rap singles began dominating the pop charts, giving the charts an air of loss of what the charts originally had signified when it first began. You will see a massive amount of debuts and drops this week based on radio airplay of common pop, rock, country, R&B stations and sales. Unfortunately, this chart will become defunct by March of 2005 wit hthe Pop 100 Airplay chart.
Not to mention, this was the week I began my radio career and was at a Top 40 station. But that’s more important to myself only.
And now, on with the countdown…
These are all the US Top 40 Singles for the Week Ending December 5, 1998
