Van Halen Biography

Van Halen was a rock band from the United States that was established in 1972 in Pasadena, California. Van Halen was noted for its intense live presentation and the virtuosity of its lead guitarist, Eddie Van Halen, who was credited with “restoring hard rock to the forefront of the music industry.” In 2007, the group was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The band is well known for their hits “Jump” and “Panama”.

Eddie Van Halen, Eddie’s brother, drummer Alex Van Halen, vocalist David Lee Roth, and bassist/vocalist Michael Anthony formed Van Halen from 1974 to 1985.

The band’s self-titled debut album debuted at No. 19 on the Billboard pop music charts in 1978 and went on to sell over 10 million copies in the United States. Van Halen II, Women and Children First, Fair Warning, and Diver Down were released in 1982, and all four albums have subsequently been certified multi-platinum. Van Halen had become one of the most popular rock bands in the early 1980s. The album 1984 was a huge triumph, with 10 million copies sold in the United States and four major singles; the lead song, “Jump,” was the band’s only number one record in the United States.

In 1985, Roth departed the band to pursue a solo career, and former Montrose lead vocalist Sammy Hagar took his place. Over the span of 11 years, the group released four number one, multi-platinum albums in the United States with Hagar (5150 in 1986, OU812 in 1988, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge in 1991, and Balance in 1995). Hagar quit the band in 1996, just before the release of Best Of – Volume I, the band’s first greatest hits collection. Former Extreme frontman Gary Cherone took over as Hagar’s replacement, and the band recorded the financially unsuccessful Van Halen III album in 1998 before splitting up in 1999. Van Halen then remained on hiatus until reforming with Hagar in 2003 for a worldwide tour in 2004 and the release of The Best of Both Worlds, a double-disc greatest hits collection. In 2005, Hagar left Van Halen for the second time. In 2006, Roth returned, but Eddie’s son, Wolfgang Van Halen, took over on bass guitar. A Different Kind of Truth, the band’s final studio album, was released in 2012 and was a commercial and critical success; it was also Van Halen’s first album with Roth in 28 years and the only one with Wolfgang.

Van Halen is currently ranked 20th on the RIAA’s list of best-selling artists in the United States, with 56 million albums sold in the United States and more than 80 million globally, making them one of the most successful bands of all time. Van Halen is one of just five rock bands to have sold more than 10 million copies of two studio albums in the United States, and is tied for the most multi-platinum albums by an American band as of 2007. Van Halen has also achieved 13 number-one singles on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart. On VH1’s list of the top 100 Hard Rock performers of all time, the band was ranked sixth.

Eddie was diagnosed with cancer in 2001 and died on October 6, 2020, from the condition. Wolfgang confirmed that Van Halen had disbanded a month after his father’s death.
