Van Morrison Biography

Sir George Ivan Morrison, known professionally as Van Morrison, is a Northern Irish singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer whose recording career spans seven decades. He has been active since 1958 till today, and he is well known for his hit song “Brown Eyed Girl”. He has won two Grammy Awards.

George Ivan Morrison was born on August 31, 1945, in Bloomfield, Belfast, Northern Ireland, at 125 Hyndford Street. He played a variety of instruments, including guitar, harmonica, keyboards, and saxophone, for many Irish showbands in the late 1950s, playing popular hits of the period. Morrison rose to notoriety as the lead singer of the Northern Irish R&B and rock band Them in the mid 1960s, earning the nickname “Van the Man” from his admirers. He recorded the garage band classic “Gloria” with Them.

Morrison’s solo career began in 1967 with the publication of the smash tune “Brown Eyed Girl,” which was released as a single in mid-June 1967 and reached number 10 in the US charts under the pop-oriented leadership of Bert Berns. Morrison’s most-played song was “Brown Eyed Girl.” The song stayed on the charts for a total of sixteen weeks. It’s widely regarded as Morrison’s trademark tune.

Morrison’s contract was bought out by Warner Bros. Records after Berns’ death, and he was given three sessions to record Astral Weeks (1968). Despite being a flop at first, the record has since become a classic. Morrison established himself as a major performer with Moondance (1970), and he continued to build on his reputation throughout the 1970s with a series of critically praised albums and live performances.

“Brown Eyed Girl” was the most popular song of the 1960s decade, according to a 2015 analysis of downloads since 2004 and airplay since 2010. It was ranked No. 21 on Rolling Stone/100 MTV’s Greatest Pop Songs list in 2000, and No. 49 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Rock Songs list. The Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time put “Brown Eyed Girl” at No. 110 in 2010. The Grammy Hall of Fame inducted “Brown Eyed Girl” in January 2007.

Much of Morrison’s music is built on the foundations of soul and R&B music. Longer, spiritually inspired musical voyages that reflect the impact of Celtic tradition, jazz, and stream-of-consciousness narrative, such as the album Astral Weeks, make up an equal part of his discography. The combination of the two strains is frequently referred to as “Celtic soul.” His music has been described as achieving “a kind of ferocious transcendence,” while his live performances have been hailed as “transcendental” and “inspiring.”

Morrison’s albums have charted in Ireland and the United Kingdom, with more than 40 hitting the top 40 in the UK. With the release of Latest Record Project, Volume 1, he became the first artist in four decades to have four top ten albums in the UK. Eighteen of his albums have charted in the United States, with twelve of them reaching the top 40 between 1997 and 2017.

He has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, as well as receiving two Grammy Awards, the 1994 Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music, and the 2017 Americana Music Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. He was knighted in 2016 for his contributions to the music business and tourism in Northern Ireland.
