Weezer Biography

Weezer is an American rock band that was formed in 1992 in Los Angeles, California. Rivers Cuomo (lead vocals, lead guitar, keyboards), Patrick Wilson (drums, percussion, backing vocals), Brian Bell (rhythm guitar, backing vocals, keyboards), and Scott Shriner (rhythm guitar, backing vocals, keyboards) have been in the band since 2001. (bass, backing vocals, keyboards). They are well known for their top hits “Island In the Sun” and “Say It Ain’t So”.

On March 19, 1992, they played their first gig, closing for Keanu Reeves’ band Dogstar. Cuomo’s father gave him a moniker, which they adopted. Cuomo gave Sharp a year to secure a record deal for the band before accepting a scholarship to the University of California, Berkeley. Weezer recorded a demo called The Kitchen Tape in November, which included a version of the future Weezer single “Say It Ain’t So.” Todd Sullivan, an A&R man at Geffen Records, heard the demo and signed Weezer in June 1993.

Weezer released their self-titled first album, commonly known as the Blue Album, in May 1994, after signing with Geffen Records in 1993. The Blue Album became a multi-platinum success thanks to music videos for the singles “Buddy Holly,” “Undone – The Sweater Song,” and “Say It Ain’t So.” Pinkerton (1996), Weezer’s second album, which had a darker, more abrasive sound, was a commercial failure and got mixed reviews at the time, but went on to earn cult status and critical praise years later. Pinkerton and the Blue Album are now widely regarded as two of the best albums of the 1990s. Weezer went on sabbatical after bassist Matt Sharp quit the band during the Pinkerton tour.

Weezer returned in 2001 with the Green Album, which featured new bassist Mikey Welsh. The album was a commercial success and garnered mainly excellent reviews, with a more pop feel with singles “Hash Pipe” and “Island in the Sun” promoting it. Welsh was replaced by Shriner after the Green Album tour. Maladroit (2002), Weezer’s fourth album, received largely excellent reviews but poor sales. Make Believe (2005) garnered mixed reviews, however its lead song “Beverly Hills” became Weezer’s first to enter the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 and to top the US Modern Rock Tracks chart.

Weezer’s Red Album was published in 2008, and its lead single, “Pork and Beans,” was the third Weezer song to top the Modern Rock Tracks chart, with a Grammy-winning music video. More “contemporary pop production” and songs co-written with other artists were featured on Raditude (2009) and Hurley (2010), which received mixed reviews and moderate sales. Pacific Daydream (2017) featured a more mainstream pop sound, while Everything Will Be Alright in the End (2014) and the White Album (2016) returned to a rock style and received more good reviews. Weezer released the Teal Album, a collection of cover songs, in 2019, followed by the Black Album. OK Human, an orchestral pop album released in 2021, was followed by Van Weezer, a hard-rock inspired album released in 2022. They plan to produce a series of extended plays based on the four seasons in 2022, with SZNZ: Spring being the first to be released. Weezer has sold over 35 million records globally, with 10.2 million in the United States.
