Whitesnake Biography

Whitesnake is an English hard rock band that was formed in 1978 in London. The band was formed as a backup band for Deep Purple singer David Coverdale, who had recently quit the band. Coverdale is the only permanent member of the band throughout its history, despite the fact that the band swiftly blossomed into its own entity. The band is well known for their top hits “Here I Go Again” and “Is This Love?”.

On March 3, 1978, the band known as David Coverdale’s Whitesnake performed their first gig at Lincoln Technical College.Their live debut was supposed to take place on February 23 at Nottingham’s Sky Bird Club, however it was canceled. Coverdale had intended for the band to be known simply as Whitesnake, but he was forced to use his own name because of his status as the former lead singer of Deep Purple.

During their early years, Whitesnake had a lot of success in the United Kingdom, Europe, and Japan. Ready an’ Willing, Come an’ Get It, and Saints & Sinners all charted in the top ten in the United Kingdom. Trouble, their debut album, was released in October 1978 and charted at number 50 in the United Kingdom. “A few surprising quirks throw the album off-balance here and there,” Eduardo Rivadavia said in a retrospective review for AllMusic, “but all things considered, it is easy to understand why Trouble turned out to be the first step in a long, and very successful career.” Trouble was followed by an 18-date UK tour, which began on October 26, 1978. Live at Hammersmith was recorded and published in Japan from the final show at the Hammersmith Odeon in London.

This was purportedly done to please Japanese promoters who refused to book Whitesnake without a live recording, according to Coverdale. Coverdale, on the other hand, had set his eyes on breaking through in North America by the mid-1980s, when Whitesnake was still relatively obscure. In 1987, Whitesnake released their self-titled album, which became their most successful to date, selling over eight million copies in the United States and spawning the hit songs “Here I Go Again” and “Is This Love.” Whitesnake also embraced a more modern style, similar to the glam metal scene in Los Angeles.

After releasing Slip of the Tongue in 1989, Coverdale decided to take a break from the music industry and put Whitesnake on hiatus. With the exception of a few brief reunions in the 1990s, Whitesnake remained largely dormant until 2003, when Coverdale reformed the band to commemorate the band’s 25th anniversary. Whitesnake have since produced four more studio albums and toured extensively throughout the world.

Critics have described Whitesnake’s early sound as blues rock, but by the mid-1980s, the band had shifted to a more commercially accessible hard rock approach. Whitesnake’s songs frequently touch on love and sex, and they’ve been chastised for their overuse of sexual innuendos and double entendres. Throughout their history, Whitesnake has been nominated for numerous honors, including Best British Group at the 1988 Brit Awards. Several media publications have included them on lists of the finest hard rock bands of all time, and their songs and albums have appeared on numerous “best of” lists, including VH1 and Rolling Stone.
