Chart Performance: Pop (#6) and R&B (#1); 1956

Story Behind The Song By Harris Sterling

In 1956, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers released Why Do Fools Fall in Love, one of the earliest and most influential doo-wop hits of the rock and roll era. The song is credited to Frankie Lymon, Herman Santiago, and Jimmy Merchant.

Produced by George Goldner, the recording featured a lively rhythm and Lymon’s distinctive high tenor lead. Released in early 1956, Why Do Fools Fall in Love reached #1 on the R&B chart and climbed into the Top 10 on the Billboard Pop chart.

The lyric poses a simple, universal question about the nature of love. Rather than offering answers, the song captures youthful curiosity and emotional vulnerability.

Why Do Fools Fall in Love became the group’s signature hit and remains a cornerstone of 1950s vocal harmony and early rock and roll history.
