Yes Band Biography

Jon Anderson, the lead singer and frontman of Yes, bassist Chris Squire, guitarist Peter Banks, pianist Tony Kaye, and drummer Bill Bruford formed the band in London in 1968. Throughout their history, the band has had multiple line-up changes, with 19 musicians serving as full-time members. Guitarist Steve Howe, keyboardist Geoff Downes, singer Jon Davison, and bassist Billy Sherwood have been with the band since May 2022. Yes has experimented with a variety of musical styles over the years and is widely regarded as a progressive rock pioneer.

Yes gave a solo concert in the Queen Elizabeth Hall on March 21, 1970, following a tour of Scandinavia with the Faces. The second half included a 20-piece youth orchestra performing portions from their second CD Time and a Word. Banks quit the group three months before the album’s release, on April 18, 1970. After expressing displeasure with the concept of recording with an orchestra and the firing of Flynn earlier in the year, Banks later revealed that he was sacked by Anderson and Squire, with Kaye and Bruford having no previous knowledge. Time and a Word includes original songs as well as two new covers: Buffalo Springfield‘s “Everydays” and Richie Havens’ “No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed.” The album charted at number 45 in the United Kingdom.

As indicated by their first two albums, Yes began performing original compositions as well as modified covers of rock, pop, blues, and jazz music. The Yes Album (1971), Fragile (1971), and Close to the Edge (1971) were the band’s most successful albums after a change of direction in 1970. They disbanded in 1981 after a series of successful progressive rock albums, the most successful of which were The Yes Album (1971), Fragile (1971), and Close to the Edge (1981). (1972). Yes traveled as a big rock band, earning a reputation for their extravagant stage sets, light shows, and Roger Dean-designed album covers. The success of Fragile single “Roundabout” established their prominence throughout the decade and beyond.

Yes regrouped in 1983 with a new line-up that included Trevor Rabin and a musical direction that was more commercial and pop-oriented.TThe result was 90125 (1983), their best-selling album, which featured the hit single “Owner of a Lonely Heart” in the United States. Yes was an eight-piece band from 1991 to 1992 after merging with Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe for Union (1991) and its tour. Yes has released albums with varying degrees of success since 1994, as well as completed tours from 1994 to 2004. They began touring in 2008 after a four-year sabbatical and continue to make albums, the most recent of which is The Quest (2021). From 2016 through 2018, a new lineup of former Yes members called Yes Featuring Jon Anderson, Trevor Rabin, and Rick Wakeman began touring under the name Yes Featuring Jon Anderson, Trevor Rabin, and Rick Wakeman.
