Chart Performance: Pop (#1) and R&B (#1); 1957

Story Behind The Song By Harris Sterling

In 1957, Sam Cooke released You Send Me, the single that introduced him to a mainstream pop audience. Written by Cooke himself, the song marked his transition from gospel performer with The Soul Stirrers to secular solo artist.

Produced by Bumps Blackwell, the recording featured a gentle rhythm, understated instrumentation, and Cooke’s smooth vocal delivery. Released late in 1957, You Send Me reached #1 on both the Billboard Pop and R&B charts.

The lyric centers on sincere romantic devotion. Rather than elaborate metaphor, Cooke expresses straightforward affection, using the repeated phrase “You send me” to convey emotional impact.

You Send Me became Sam Cooke’s breakthrough hit and remains one of the foundational recordings of late-1950s soul and pop crossover success.
