Story Behind The Song By Ed Osborne
A&R man Joey Gardner – who worked at Tommy Boy Records – would regularly receive a visit from Kayel, a neighborhood boy, who’d play demos of his rap group. When Joey showed no interest, Kayel invited Joey to a Sweet 16 party where Kayel’s group were scheduled to sing.
At the party Kayel sang an original song called Scars Of Love over the instrumental track to a popular rap song. Within a week Joey had them in the studio, and shortly thereafter Tony, Kayel, and Aby – “TKA” – were riding high in the clubs with One Way Love.
TKA’s blend of rap and dance, known as Latin hip-hop, carried them from 1986 to 1992. By then Joey and Kayel wanted to depart from TKA’s trademark sound, and teamed up on a solo project. Now calling himself “K7,” Kayel released Come Baby Come, which was written and produced by Gardner.
Joining Kayel on Baby was jazz and session vocalist Camille Filfiley, who’d sung with TKA on the 1990 cut Are You For Real. (Born Louis Sharpe 8/25/69)

Hi. I got my first record at age two and never looked back, spending a decades-long career in radio and the music business. Even after years of reading about and listening to all types of music, I am still fascinated by it. Apart from that, I’m endlessly intrigued by art, nature, and the inner lives of people (and dogs).
