Cyndi Lauper Biography
Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper Thornton is a singer, songwriter, actress, and activist from the United States. Her career has lasted more than 40 years. Her debut album, She’s So Unusual (1983), was the first by a female artist to achieve four top-five Billboard Hot 100 hits—”Girls Just Want to Have Fun”, “Time After Time”, “She Bop”, and “All Through the Night”—and earned Lauper the Best New Artist award at the 27th Annual Grammy Awards in 1985. Her breakthrough continued with the soundtrack to the film The Goonies and her second studio album True Colors (1986). This album featured the number one single “True Colors” and the number three single “Change of Heart.” She scored a success with “I Drove All Night” in 1989.
She was born in Brooklyn, New York City on June 22, 1953. Lauper began her career as a vocalist in several cover bands in the early 1970s. Doc West, for example, performed disco music as well as Janis Joplin. Flyer, a later band, performed in the New York metropolitan region, singing hits by bands such as Bad Company, Jefferson Airplane, and Led Zeppelin. Despite the fact that Lauper was on stage, she was unhappy singing covers. Lauper injured her vocal cords in 1977 and had to take a year off from singing. Doctors warned her she’d never sing again, but with the help of vocal instructor Katie Agresta, she regained her voice.
Lauper has released eleven studio albums and been involved in numerous other projects since 1983. Memphis Blues was Billboard’s most successful blues album of the year in 2010, spending 13 weeks at the top of the Billboard Blues Albums chart. In 2013, she received the Tony Award for outstanding original score for her work on the Broadway musical Kinky Boots, making her the first woman to do so. The show also won five other Tony Awards, including Best New Musical. Lauper won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album for the cast album in 2014. The West End show won Best New Musical at the Olivier Awards in 2016.
Lauper’s albums have sold over 50 million copies globally. She has won Grammys, Emmys, Tonys, the Outer Critics Circle in New York, MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), Billboard Awards, and American Music Awards (AMAs). Lauper, who has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Hollywood Walk of Fame, is one of the few vocalists who have won three of the four major American entertainment prizes (EGOT). At the 1984 VMAs, she won the inaugural Best Female Video award for “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” MTV, VH1, and Rolling Stone have named this music video as one of the best of all time. She is recognised in the Women Who Rock exhibit at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Her debut album was named one of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time by Rolling Stone, and her song “Time After Time” was named one of the 100 Best Songs of the Last 25 Years by VH1. VH1 named Lauper 58th among the 100 Greatest Women in Rock & Roll.
Lauper is noted for her unusual look, which includes a variety of hair colours and odd attire, as well as her powerful and unmistakable four-octave vocal range. She has received recognition for her humanitarian activities, particularly as a supporter of LGBT rights in the United States. Her charitable contributions were recognised in 2013 when she was welcomed as a special guest to the U.S. Inauguration of President Barack Obama’s second term.
