Do That To Me One More Time – Captain & Tennille | Top 40 Chart Performance, Story and Song Meaning

Chart Performance: Pop (#1) & Adult Contemporary (#4); 1980

Story Behind The Song By Ed Osborne

Husband and wife team Daryl “Captain” Dragon and Toni Tennille kicked off their recording career with the #1 record of 1975, Love Will Keep Us Together. That single solidified the duo’s image and sound; All-American squeaky clean sunshine pop.

Although the #4 follow-up, The Way I Want To Touch You, hinted at less pure leanings, the fans and media types ignored those in favor of the Disney-esque romance of Lonely Night (Angel Face) and Muskrat Love. Eventually, C&T tired of such wholesome fare and released You Never Done It Like That in 1978.

When their label began to move away from Daryl and Toni’s adult contemporary music, the two jumped ship. The head of their new label thought Do That To Me One More Time, a “little tune” Toni had penned as an album track, had hit written all over it.

Upon reconsideration, Toni agreed. Their intuition proved right on as Do That To Me became the Captain & Tennille’s second #1.
