Heart And Soul – T’Pau | Top 40 Chart Performance, Story and Song Meaning

Chart Performance: Pop (#4); 1987

Story Behind The Song By Ed Osborne

If you’re a devoted fan of Star Trek, then you’ll recognize T’Pau as the name of a Vulcan princess in the episode “Amok Time.” Behind that exotic band name was Carol Decker and five men.

One of those men, guitarist Ronnie Rogers, caught Carol’s eye while he was playing in Katz at a gig in Wellington Shropshire, England. Carol persuaded Ronnie to join her band, Lazers – soon to become T’Pau.

After several years of playing at “Young Farmers” functions and in local dives, Carol and Ron finally caught a break when T’Pau was offered a record deal.

In the U.K., Heart And Soul came out in February of 1987, and did little until Pepe included it in a jeans commercial. H&S entered the U.S. pop chart in May, and re entered the British chart in July, ultimately reaching #4 in both countries.

T’Pau managed six Top 20 singles and three Top 10 albums in England, yet, remained a “one hit wonder” Stateside.
