Story Behind The Song By Ed Osborne

Power blues band Savoy Brown had been around for two years when “Lonesome” Dave Peverett (guitar/vocals), Roger Earl (drums), and Tony Stevens (bass) came on board in 1967. Despite being in the forefront of the British blues boom of the late 1960’s, internal conflict resulted in Dave, Roger, and Tony’s defection to form a new group.

Their first recordings were off-the-cuff jams of old rockabilly tunes released as Warren Phillips and the Rockets. When guitarist Rod Phillips joined them, Foghat was born. Signed to Bearsville Records in the States, the band’s first album was recorded in Wales and produced by the legendary Dave Edmunds, who’d already scored a transcontinental smash with I Hear You Knockin’.

One track immediately jumped onto radio station turntables: I Just Want To Make Love To You, a rocked up version of Muddy Waters’ 1954 R&B hit. As for the name “Foghat,” it was a nonsense word created by Dave and his brother during a demented boyhood Scrabble game.
