I’ll Tumble 4 Ya – Culture Club | Top 40 Chart Performance, Story and Song Meaning

Chart Performance: Pop (#9); 1983

Story Behind The Song By Ed Osborne

1983 was the Year of Michael Jackson. And right behind, nipping at MJ’s trademark white socks and loafers, was London’s Culture Club. While MTV celebrated anniversary #2 on August 1, 1983, viewers ogled the latest smock-and-makeup look of George “Boy George” O’Dowd as he minced his way through I’ll Tumble 4 Ya. George began using fashion as a way to draw attention when he was in school.

During his brief tenure with Bow Wow Wow (as Lieutenant Lush), his look drew the attention of one Mikey Craig, and together they formed Sex Gang Children in 1981.

Two months after their first public gig, a Virgin Records exec caught the band – now called Culture Club after the diversity of the members – and gave them a chance to record a demo. That initial meeting paid off big time when Culture Club released five Top 10 singles within 12 months.
