I’ll Make Love To You – Boyz II Men | Top 40 Chart Performance, Story and Song Meaning

Chart Performance: Pop (#1) R&B & Adult Contemporary (#1); 1994

Story Behind The Song By Ed Osborne

According to Billboard magazine, the Top 3 singles of the past 50 years are One Sweet Day, Macarena (bayside boys mix), and I’ll Make Love To You. But determining which one of these really deserves the top honor is somewhat complicated.

Macarena by Los Del Rio, for instance, sold the most copies: over four million to Day‘s two and Love‘s one. On the other hand, record buyers grabbed up 12 million plus copies of Boyz II Men’s II album, more than nine million of Mariah Carey’s Daylight LP (which included the hit singles), yet, less than one million of Los Del Rio’s long-player.

Plus, both Carey and Boyz II Men topped the Adult Contemporary chart. Now for the BIIM rump card: I’ll Make Love To You also reached #1 R&B (vs. #2 for One Sweet Day), capping a credible claim to the #1 rock era single honors. A trivia note: Boyz II men also sang with Mariah on One Sweet Day.
