Story Behind The Song By Ed Osborne

Only one founding member of one of Australia’s most popular musical exports was actually born Down Under. The other Little River Banders hailed from Holland, New Zealand, Italy, and England.

Plus, the Australian, the Dutchman, and one of the Englishman originally played together in a band called Mississippi. (Are you still with me?) Once back in Melbourne the international crew took their name from a road sign, and set about releasing hits in their adopted country.

Soon LRB scored its first hit stateside, the appropriately named It’s A Long Way There (#28; 1976). Twelve months later Help Is On The Way broke them into the mainstream.

LRB’s fourth official studio album, Sleeper Catcher, was named after the term for someone who retrieves bets left on the floor by gamblers in an Australian pastime called “two up,” and it certainly won the game for them. Two of songs by Graham Goble – the Australian – became LRB’s biggest hits so far: Reminiscing and Lady.
