My Cherie Amour – Stevie Wonder | Top 40 Chart Performance, Story and Song Meaning
Chart Performance: Pop (#4) and R&B; 1969
Story Behind The Song By Ed Osborne
Although Stevie’s first three releases bombed, the Motown gang was sold on the 12-year-old wonder and kept looking for the magic combination. Everything finally fell into place during a live performance at Chicago’s Regal Theater, and the resulting single – Fingertips Pt. 2 – roared to the top of both the R&B and Hot 100 lists in the summer of 1963.
One of Fingertips‘ co-writers, Henry Cosby, played a key role in the making of Stevie’s many hits, along with Sylvia Moy and Wonder himself, all of whom collaborated on Uptight (Everything’s Alright), I Was Made To Love Her, and I’m Wondering.
Once Stevie worked up a song’s basics, Moy would polish off the lyrics and work on the vocal melody, while Cosby contributed the arrangement and produced the instrumental track.
In 1969 the three took a break from their usual uptempo tunes, and crafted a gorgeous summertime ballad, My Cherie Amour.

Hi. I got my first record at age two and never looked back, spending a decades-long career in radio and the music business. Even after years of reading about and listening to all types of music, I am still fascinated by it. Apart from that, I’m endlessly intrigued by art, nature, and the inner lives of people (and dogs).
