Saturday In The Park – Chicago | Top 40 Chart Performance, Story and Song Meaning
Chart Performance: Pop (#3); 1972
Story Behind The Song By Ed Osborne
In 1969 two horn-dominated album-oriented groups – Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears – placed singles on the chart which featured a unique blend of rock and jazz elements. Within a year BS&T’s fortunes were already waning, while Chicago was well on its way to mastering the art of the short-form pop hit.
Originally called Chicago Transit Authority, the band changed its name when Chicago Mayor Richard Daley threatened them with legal action. No matter. Following the change, the Windy City gang ran an amazing eleven consecutive albums up the LP list, including five #1’s in a row.
Chicago V, the first of the #1’s, stayed on top for nine weeks. Whereas many of Chicago’s early 45RPM releases were edited down from long-form album tracks, the lead-off single from V, Saturday In The Park, fit the 7″ vinyl format perfectly. From this point on all of Chicago’s hits followed this successful radio-friendly formula.

Hi. I got my first record at age two and never looked back, spending a decades-long career in radio and the music business. Even after years of reading about and listening to all types of music, I am still fascinated by it. Apart from that, I’m endlessly intrigued by art, nature, and the inner lives of people (and dogs).
