Together Forever – Rick Astley | Top 40 Chart Performance, Story and Song Meaning
Chart Performance: Pop(#1); 1988
Story Behind The Song By Ed Osborne
Although Mike Stock, Matt Aitken, and Pete Waterman aren’t household names in either Britain or America, their work is extremely well known. They’re the men behind You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) by Dead Or Alive (#11 U.S./#1 U.K.), Venus by Bananarama (#1 U.S./#8 U.K.), The Loco Motion from Kylie Minoque (#3 U.S./#2 U.K.), and Rick Astley.
Rick, then fronting FBI, first met Waterman at a private social club, and from there went to work at his studio as a glorified “tea boy.” In between making tea for star recording artists and learning recording basics, Rick put together his demo tape at another small studio.
When S-A-W heard it, they knew his voice was unique and – more importantly – recognizable, so the most successful producers in the Euro Dance-Pop universe took on Rick as their newest “find.”
Together Forever, also written by S-A-W, gave Rick his second straight #1 on the U.S. record and club play charts.

Hi. I got my first record at age two and never looked back, spending a decades-long career in radio and the music business. Even after years of reading about and listening to all types of music, I am still fascinated by it. Apart from that, I’m endlessly intrigued by art, nature, and the inner lives of people (and dogs).
