Troglodyte (Cave Man) – Jimmy Castor Bunch | Top 40 Chart Performance, Story and Song Meaning
Chart Performance: Pop (#6); 1972
Story Behind The Song By Ed Osborne
Jimmy Castor had just turned 13 when I Promise To Remember, a song he had written and recorded with his group, The Juniors, was nestled in the R&B Top 10 by teen sensations, Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers.
After this auspicious beginning, Jimmy continued to study music theory at New York’s Music and Art High School and play his beloved saxophone. During the winter of 1966/67, Jimmy’s name was once again on a hit record entitled Hey, Leroy, Your Mama’s Callin’ You.
1972 found Jimmy with a new group, the Jimmy Castor Bunch, which included Doug Gibson, whose career start also dated back to the mid-1950’s when he was a member of the Vibraharps.
Troglodyte certainly bore no resemblance to Jimmy or Doug’s vocal harmony roots, yet, unlike their R&B group recordings, it was a stone cold smash. Tucked away on the flip side was Jimmy’s update of I Promise To Remember.

Hi. I got my first record at age two and never looked back, spending a decades-long career in radio and the music business. Even after years of reading about and listening to all types of music, I am still fascinated by it. Apart from that, I’m endlessly intrigued by art, nature, and the inner lives of people (and dogs).
