We Belong – Pat Benatar | Top 40 Chart Performance, Story and Song Meaning
Chart Performance: Pop (#5); 1985
Story Behind The Song By Ed Osborne
It seemed as if Pat Benatar always wanted to be a singer, through school and at nights during her first marriage. By the mid 1970’s, she was a regular at Catch A Rising Star open mike nights.
Her stage image underwent a radical shift in 1977 when, following a Halloween party, she did her gig in a hip babe in-black vampire costume. A year later, Pat met Neil Giraldo, one-time member of Rick Derringer’s band, who eventually became her partner both professionally and personally.
Heartbreaker (#23; 1980) established her as a chart performer and initiated a run of hit singles and albums, which earned four consecutive Grammies for Best Rock Female Vocal. January, 1985 found Pat in the pop Top 5 with We Belong, her final appearance there. However, rock radio continued to embrace her releases right up through 1993’s Everybody Lay Down.

Hi. I got my first record at age two and never looked back, spending a decades-long career in radio and the music business. Even after years of reading about and listening to all types of music, I am still fascinated by it. Apart from that, I’m endlessly intrigued by art, nature, and the inner lives of people (and dogs).
