Weak – SWV (Sisters With Voices) | Top 40 Chart Performance, Story and Song Meaning

Chart Performance: Pop (#1 for 2 weeks) & R&B (#1 for 2 weeks); 1993

Story Behind The Song By Ed Osborne

For Cheryl “Coko” Gamble, Tamara “Taj” Johnson, and Leanne “Lelee” Lyons, their start on the path to fame came when they first sang together in junior high, calling themselves Female Edition after their favorite boy group.

Ultimately, the girls signed on with a manager which led to a record deal. Their label hooked them up with singer/writer/producer Brian Alexander Morgan.

In Brian’s song catalog was Weak, inspired by his feelings for an unavailable woman he’d known in Sacramento, which fit SWV to a tee. Released while SWV’s previous single, I’m So Into You, was still going strong, Weak joined it in the Top 10 for five weeks.

Coincidentally, Weak and Right Here/Human Nature later held down the #10 and #11 spots in the same week. All told an SWV recording resided in the Top 10 for 29 straight weeks, making the trio the top group of 1993.
